Helmut Newton wurde 1920 als Sohn einer wohlhabenden jüdischen Knopffabrikantenfamilie in Berlin unter dem Namen Helmut Neustädter geboren. Bis 1936 besuchte er das Gymnasium , welches er aber abbrach, nachdem er schon zu dieser Zeit mehr dem Schwimmen , den Mädchen und dem Fotografieren zugetan war.
